There’s plenty going on in Berlin from open air concerts to Fashion Week
If you happen to be in Berlin over the next few weeks, you certainly shouldn’t have a problem finding something to do. In addition to all the usual sights, there are a number of events taking place which will be worth a visit.
For a few days every summer (from 3rd to 8th July this year) the Gendarmenmarkt square in the heart of Berlin turns into a huge concert arena. The Gendarmenmarkt provides a wonderful picturesque setting for the Classic Open Air Festival which has become an attraction for national and international visitors and artists. The musical palette is very wide ranging, ands includes German and Italian opera, pop classics, soul, swing and jazz. Some productions also include laser or fireworks displays
Continuing the open air theme, on 6th July for one day only the Open Air Gallery turns the Oberbaumbrücke into an art mile. More than a hundred artists display their paintings, photographs and sculptures on this bridge which lies between Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain. A mixture of experienced professionals and up-and-coming young artists are given the chance to present their art in various forms – paintings/graphics, sculptures and photography. Visitors to the Gallery are not just spectators.either. All visitors get the chance to paint, draw or doodle on a 120 metre long canvas.
An unusual event which takes place just once a year is Botanical Night at the Botanic Garden. During the Botanical Night a 16 kilometre long path is illuminated through several themed gardens. Various mythical creatures appear amongst the plants and turn the garden into a romantic and magical place. The evening’s programme includes cabaret, theatre, dance performances and food delicacies. The evening ends with a huge firework display above the Italian garden.
Finally an event which cannot be ignored in July is Berlin Fashion Week which this year takes place from 8th to 13th July. During Berlin Fashion Week the whole fashion industry visits the capital, meeting up at shows and attending off-site events. Anyone trying to book a hotel in central Berlin during Fashion Week will certainly realise that there is a big event taking place in the city! Fashion events take place all over the city, with the main shows being on the Pariser Platz in front of the Brandenburg Gate.
