New York, Paris and Venice take the top three slots in this year’s customer satisfaction poll.

It’s that time of year when polls are published and awards are in full flow, congratulating and celebrating the hotels, spas, cities and countries that have hit the high notes in the 2014 holiday season. I recently blogged about Lonely Planet’s recommendations for 2015, well this time I’m taking a look back at the top trends of 2014 according to the UK readers of Condé Nast Traveller, and in particular their top 20 favourite worldwide cities as featured in the readers’ travel awards.

As expected, the list included capital cities and perennial favourites from all four corners of the globe with top spot going to New York, highlighted particularly for its nightlife and variety of accommodation. Other far-flung destinations included Sydney, Cape Town and Dubai in 4th, 9th and 10th positions respectively, with San Francisco, Hong Kong, Singapore, Vancouver, Buenos Aires and Boston slotting into the top 20 behind.

On a European note, it’s always great to see so many cities featuring so prominently, half of the list in fact, with Paris achieving the runners up position and Venice coming a very close third, highlighted in particular for its culture. After Sydney in 4th place come Istanbul, Barcelona, Rome and Florence in 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th spots respectively, and Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen and Madrid completing the top 20.

So whether it’s Notre Dame de Paris, Istanbul’s iconic Blue Mosque or the unique Sagrada Família of Barcelona, New York’s Statue of Liberty or Copenhagen’s Little Mermaid, Berlin’s Brandenburg Gates or Rome’s mighty Coliseum, cruises on the waterways of Venice or Amsterdam or art appreciation at Florence’s Uffizi or the prestigious Prado Museum, with so many fabulous destinations both practically on your doorstep and so easily accessible, where will your next city break be?

With a French grandmother, childhood holidays on the continent and a degree in French and Spanish, a love of languages and travel has always been in my blood. Fresh from university with an unfettered enthusiasm to show off my linguistic ability and first-hand knowledge of the world beyond the UK, I entered the travel industry and, 16 years on, I’m still there! With several years spent in the luxury sector planning escorted holidays across Europe for the American market, followed by an even longer tenure designing short breaks with a difference in the must-see cities of Paris, Barcelona, Rome, Amsterdam, Madrid, Prague, Florence, Brussels, Venice, Salzburg, Milan, Krakow and Berlin (to name but a few), it’s fair to say that Europe is my passion! Today my travels have taken me far beyond the boundaries of Europe with so many destinations still to discover, yet the continent abounds in such a wealth of treasures – historical and architectural, cultural and musical, gastronomic, artistic and linguistic – that its appeal, for me, will be eternal.
