A short excursion by rail will take you to the Jungfraujoch , the highest railway station in Europe. Take the Bernese Oberland Railway from Interlaken Ost Station to Lauterbrunnen and on to Kleine Scheidegg. Here you start the ascent of the Jungfrau on a rack railway which runs almost entirely in a tunnel which is built into the Eiger and Mönch mountains. There are two stations in the middle of the tunnel, Eigerwand and Eismeer, where passengers can disembark to observe the neighbouring mountains through panoramic windows built into the mountainside. At Eigerwand you’ll look straight down the famous Eiger North face. At Eismeer you can view the world of eternal snow and ice. The journey itself is quite a mind-blowing experience before you’ve even reached the summit!

The journey continues to Jungfraujoch station and you can stand at over 3,400m amidst a snow-capped mountain world. The view of the nearby Aletsch Glacier is also very spectacular. Other worthwhile sights include the ice sculptures on the inside of the glacier and the ultra-scenic “Top of Europe” glacier restaurant.

Another excursion which is easily possible from Interlaken is to the Schilthorn, otherwise known as James Bond Mountain. The famous Schilthorn mountain boasts the world’s first revolving restaurant and affords the most amazing views of the Jungfrau region including the famous trio of mountains, the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. The journey from Interlaken to Mürren is also a spectacular one. From Interlaken Ost station, there is an hourly train to Lauterbrunnen, from where you make the ascent to Grutschalp in a cable car. A train then takes you along the ridge to Mürren. On a clear day, the view from the train is stunning. The last leg of the journey is a spectacular cable car ride to the Schilthorn from the town of Mürren. From Interlaken, it takes about 90 minutes to reach the Schilthorn for a truly unforgettable experience.
