Lucerne’s Christmas Markets have a uniquely special and romantic atmosphere

    Lucerne

The Swiss city of Lucerne is a perfect size for a short break.  A visit in the summer months can be extended by a few days to allow some breathtaking trips by rail to some of the many mountain highlights including the Jungfraujoch or the pretty resort of Zermatt. Mount Pilatus and Mount Rigi are also just a short but spectacular journey away.

A visit at Christmas Market time means a few days spent in the city when it’s at its vibrant and most exciting best.  The brightly coloured stalls of the Christmas Market are located in the heart of Lucerne’s Old Town and offer an array of exciting gift items that are sure to raise a smile on Christmas morning. The stalls provide a wealth of food and drink offerings including mulled wine and the tasty local pear bread, local Appenzeller cheeses and of course Swiss chocolates.  Seasonal music provided by brass ensembles and choirs won’t fail to bring on the Christmas spirit.

For anyone visiting Lucerne in the near future, the city is hosting the World Band Festival for eight days from 25th September.  The festival features the best that wind music has to offer, with an eclectic mix of wind-based music.  The world’s top orchestras, ensembles, conductors and soloists converge on the KKL Lucerne for Europe’s largest wind music festival which attracts more than 22,000 visitors.

The easiest way to reach Lucerne from the UK is by flight to Geneva, from where there is an excellent rail service from Geneva airport station.  The journey is a very scenic one, with the line winding along the edge of Lake Geneva with views of the Alps, including Mont Blanc on a clear day.  Flights operate from a number of UK regional airports including Manchester, Bristol, Edinburgh, Gatwick, Southend, Luton, Birmingham and Stansted.

Cities Direct use the centrally located 3* Hotel des Alpes in Lucerne.  This cosy, welcoming hotel is located only 5 minutes walk from the main train station, in the pedestrian zone in the heart of the city. The hotel is right by the historic Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge) where the Reuss river leaves Lake Lucerne. Numerous restaurants, boutiques, souvenir shops, museums and impressive historic buildings are within easy walking distance of the hotel.
