A new TGV high speed train service opened between Paris and Barcelona in December, making it possible to travel between the cities in only 6 hours 25 minutes. It also opens up the possibility for travellers from the UK to leave London St. Pancras in the morning and arrive by train in Barcelona just over ten hours later.
Once the service becomes better known, it will no doubt appeal to many people who would like to visit Barcelona without taking to the skies. For those with perhaps a week to spare, a twin centre city break entirely by rail with 3 or 4 nights each in Barcelona and Paris is a very attractive proposition.
The TGV Duplex high speed trains have double deck carriages so afford excellent views of the countryside as you leave the Paris urban area behind and race along at speeds of up to 199mph. There is plenty to see along the route as you speed along the scenic Rhone Valley and then glimpse the coast and the Pyrenees before arriving in the centre of Barcelona.
There will be 4 trains a day between the cities from mid March. You can leave Paris Gare de Lyon at the very comfortable time of 1007 and be in Barcelona Sants at an equally attractive 1632. For anyone wanting to travel from London to Spain in one day, a morning Eurostar will take them to Paris in just 2½ hours. There is time for a reasonably relaxed lunch in Paris before taking the afternoon TGV Duplex to Barcelona.
For those who would like to carry on and see a little more of Spain, you can take a high speed AVE train from Barcelona Sants and reach Madrid, the Spanish capital, in only 2 hours 30 minutes.
A wonderful combination – combine a city with great appeal for gastronomes, poets, romantics, and philosophers with a city known for its culture, nightlife, shopping & architecture – and see it all by speedy, comfortable rail all the way from the UK!
