An open air art festival, “Aufsehen”, will ensure that everyone casts their eyes upwards this summer
This summer in Zurich an exciting open-air art festival called “Aufsehen!” will invite people to look up in various parts of the city centre. Barely noticed building façades have been dressed in style, displaying video projections, balloons, or large photos. The festival will carry on right through the summer to 6th September.
The ceiling of the underground shopping mall at Zurich Main Station has been re-designed by eBoy, an art collective from Berlin. The design takes the form of a “Pixorama”, a picture of the shopping mall itself in detailed pixel images.
A particularly unusual location for art is the four exhaust pipes at the City Parking car park building in the centre of the city. Pipes running from the upper basement floor to the part above ground are covered with 250km of knitted wool! The knitting was carried out by knitting groups from Switzerland, Germany, France and Finland. Incorporated into the knitted strips are messages from people all over the world, giving their personal answers to the question, “What motivates you?”
This year, the Bahnhofstrasse celebrates its 150th anniversary. For the Aufsehen Festival the street will display a series of banners, on which are featured the portraits of 11 historical figures who have greatly contributed to the development of the city of Zurich.
There are many more examples of art in all its forms to be found throughout the city of Zurich this summer, making it a city well worth a visit if you are thinking of heading to Switzerland this year.
Throughout the summer visitors can participate in a guided walking tour of the Old Town to learn a little about Zurich’s history and also to look out for the fascinating and unusual works of art presented at the “Aufsehen! Summer Festival”.
